When duct cleaning is worth it
After a renovation, after moving into a house with unknown history, if you see dust blowing from registers, if someone in the home has allergies or asthma, or if it has been more than five to seven years. Duct cleaning is not a cure-all and we won't sell it as one; a good filter does more day to day. But a system full of drywall dust or pet hair should be cleaned once and then kept clean with proper filtration.
Filtration that actually works
The one-inch filter in most furnaces is designed to protect the furnace, not your lungs. A four-inch media filter cabinet captures far more dust, pollen and pet dander, lasts six to twelve months and, because it has more surface area, restricts airflow less than a high-efficiency one-inch filter. It's the single best air-quality upgrade for the money, and we can install one in a couple of hours.
Fresh air and humidity
Tightly built homes need a way to bring in fresh air. A heat-recovery ventilator exhausts stale air and brings in fresh, transferring the heat between the two streams so you're not paying to heat outdoor air. In winter, a whole-home humidifier on the furnace keeps the house at 30 to 40 percent humidity, which stops static, cracking hardwood, dry skin and that sense that the house is colder than the thermostat says.
